My great-grandfather, George Porteous, 1851-1904, remarried after my great-grandmother died (Margaret/Maggie Reid, 1851-1888). His second wife's name was Agnes Clark Moir and it is from a Moir descendant and Ontario resident that I received the photo below. I have no idea where or when this photo was taken, let alone the identities of the people in the photo, one or more of whom may be Porteouses. If it was taken in Canada, then the prices at the movie theatre might provide a clue (the 1940s perhaps?). Does the shadow belong to the photographer? |
The name on the glass window above the right shoulder of the gentleman standing second from the left shows "The Pa". Might this be "The Palace"? I scoured the Web and came up with a possibility: Daysland, Alberta. Now if I could just find an old-time resident there who could take a look at this photo and quickly eliminate Daysland from my list (or not). In a larger version of this photo, the word "Mills" seems to appear under "The Pa". |
My theory is that these people are descendants of or in some way related to one of the following families - |
| • | William Porteous and Catherine Calver (Montreal, Stratford, Manitoba, Alberta) |
|
| • | Marsden Porteous/Portus/Portice (Yorkshire, Upper Canada (various places), Michigan) |
|
| • | Samuel Porteous and Phoebe Wyce, plus 2 other wives (Upper Canada (various places), Alberta). Several of Samuel's grandsons moved to Alberta while Samuel's son, Peter Henry Porteous, remained in Ontario, passing away in Beamsville in the 1920s |
|
| • | George Porteous (a blacksmith in Berlin/Kitchener, Ontario in 1871) |
|
| • | Cornelius and/or his son Robert Porteous (Upper Canada, New York, Michigan) |
